Nano Banana 2.1 vs Nano Banana Pro vs Nano Banana 2

Short answer: 2.1 for almost everything. It's Google's fastest, best-value image model, it beat both others in Google's own tests, and it costs about a quarter of Pro's price per 1K image on Google's API. Keep Pro for a second pass when brand-critical detail or deep world knowledge matters most.

Known Limits, and How to Work Around Them▾

No image model is perfect, and you should hear it from us before you find out mid-project. These come straight from Google's Nano Banana 2.1 model card, each with the fix that works.

Tiny text & long copy

Small letters can blur at 1K.

Fix: Use 2K or native 4K and keep on-image copy concise.

Face likeness variance

Likeness can drift with poor sources.

Fix: Add 2–3 sharp, well-lit reference photos per person.

Mask brush precision

Edits can occasionally leave a trace.

Fix: Paint generously over edges, change one item per run.

Pose preservation

Edits sometimes keep the original stance.

Fix: State the desired new posture explicitly in prompt.

Left vs right orientation

Lateral directions can get swapped.

Fix: Describe relative positions ('to the left of the lamp').

World knowledge gaps

Real-world facts can have errors.

Fix: Switch on Google Search grounding for real places & events.

CREDIT PACKS

Or buy credits once, and spend them slowly

Packs cost more per credit than a plan, and the reason is on the label: they never expire, where plan credits roll over one month and then lapse.

  • Small pack

    $9.90one-time

    50 credits

Tops up any plan, or stands on its own

    ≈ 80 images at 1K (or 53 at 2K, 26 at 4K)

    Never expires

  • Large pack

    $69.90one-time

    400 credits

Same price as a month of Studio on yearly billing, which gives 1,100

    ≈ 200 images at 1K (or 133 at 2K, 66 at 4K)

    Never expires

Plan credits are always spent first, so the ones with a deadline go before the ones without. Images paid with pack credits get everything in Plus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nano Banana 2.1 FAQ

Everything you need to know about the model, our generator, commercial rights and pricing.

Is Nano Banana 2.1 free?

You can try it free here: sign up and you get one free image every week, with no card. Free images are 1K, carry a small corner mark and are for personal use. Google is also rolling 2.1 out in its own apps, where free accounts get usage limits without a published image count. Google's API has no free tier for 2.1.

Do I need to know how to write prompts?

No. Pick a job (product photo, ad, thumbnail or photo fix) and the generator fills in a proven prompt and the right settings. Swap in your own details and press Generate. If you'd rather write your own, describe the image like you'd brief a designer: full sentences beat keyword lists.

Can I edit my own photos with Nano Banana 2.1?

Yes. Upload a PNG, JPG or WebP, paint over the part you want changed, and describe the change. The model edits that area and keeps the rest as close to the original as possible. Only upload photos you have the rights to, including any people in them.

Are my photos and prompts private?

Your history is visible only to you. We send requests through Google's paid Gemini API, which Google states is not used to train its public models. BananaGen does not use your prompts or images to train models.

Will my product and label stay the same?

Closer than with any earlier Nano Banana model (2.1 scored highest on product consistency in Google's tests), but always check before you publish. Upload a sharp, well-lit photo, write 'keep the label exactly as in image 1,' and use 2K or native 4K for small print.

Can Nano Banana 2.1 put readable text in images?

Yes. Cleaner text is one of 2.1's biggest upgrades. Put the exact words in quotes, keep them short, and choose 2K or native 4K for small print. Text works best in the 15 languages Google lists, including English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi and Arabic.

What resolutions and aspect ratios does Nano Banana 2.1 support?

It makes 1K, 2K or native 4K images (1K by default) in 14 aspect ratios: 1:1, 2:3, 3:2, 3:4, 4:3, 4:5, 5:4, 9:16, 16:9 and 21:9, plus panoramic 4:1, 1:4, 8:1 and 1:8. At native 4K that's up to 4096×4096 for square and 5504×3072 for 16:9.

How many reference images can I use?

Up to 14 per image: up to 4 people whose likeness you want to keep and up to 10 objects or products you want reproduced faithfully. Name each one in your prompt, like 'the woman in image 1,' for the most reliable results. Free and Starter allow up to 3.

How long does an image take?

Usually seconds, not minutes. Google built 2.1 for Flash-level speed, and one independent launch-day test clocked 1K images at 11–12 seconds. Native 4K, High thinking and Google Search grounding add some time.

What are thinking levels?

They're Google's control for how much the model plans before it draws: Minimal, Medium (the default) or High. High helps with busy layouts, lots of text and several people, but takes longer. On BananaGen, High adds 1 credit and comes with Plus and Studio.

Can I use the images commercially?

Yes, on any paid plan or with credit packs, under BananaGen's Terms and Google's Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy. Free images are for personal use.

Do Nano Banana 2.1 images have a watermark?

Two different things. Ours: free images carry a small visible corner mark, and any plan or credit pack removes it. Google's: every image the model makes includes an invisible SynthID watermark that identifies it as AI-generated. It doesn't change how the image looks, and it isn't ours to remove.

What if a generation fails?

You pay nothing. Failed, timed-out and moderation-blocked runs never use credits.

Do unused credits expire?

Plan credits are good for one month, then expire. Credit packs never expire and stack with any plan. When you generate, we spend the credits that expire soonest first.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Cancel from your account whenever you like; your plan and credits stay active until the end of the period you've paid for. If you change your mind within 7 days of your first payment and have used less than 10% of its credits, we refund it in full.

When was Nano Banana 2.1 released?

Google released it on October 6, 2026. It went generally available in the Gemini API as gemini-nano-banana-2.1 the same day, with no preview phase, and began rolling out across Gemini apps and Google AI Studio.

What's the difference between Nano Banana 2.1 and Nano Banana 2?

It is an update to Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image). It improves realism, mask-based editing, character and product consistency, text rendering and panoramic formats, and halves the per-image API price, but drops the 512px size. Google deprecated Nano Banana 2 in the Gemini API and recommends moving to 2.1.

Nano Banana 2.1 vs Nano Banana Pro: which is better?

For most work, 2.1. In Google's published human evaluations, 2.1 with thinking scored higher than Nano Banana Pro on image preference, editing and multi-character consistency, at about a quarter of Pro's 1K API price. Google still positions Pro for the most complex jobs that need maximum world knowledge, localization and brand consistency.

How much does the Nano Banana 2.1 API cost?

On Google's Gemini API (Standard), images cost about $0.0336 at 1K, $0.0504 at 2K and $0.0756 at native 4K, and Batch is half price. Search grounding includes 5,000 free requests a month, then $14 per 1,000.

Is BananaGen affiliated with Google?

No. BananaGen is an independent product that uses Google's official Nano Banana 2.1 model through the paid Gemini API. Nano Banana, Gemini and Google are trademarks of Google LLC.

Is Nano Banana 2.1 the same as 'Spicy Mayo' or 'Nano Banana 2.5'?

No. 'spicy-mayo' is an anonymous codename seen in Arena's blind image battles, and 'Nano Banana 2.5' has no Google model page, API ID or price. 2.1 is the model Google actually released, as gemini-nano-banana-2.1.
